SOAR FOX CITIES WELCOMES NEW DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT, AMBER NELSON, TO THEIR TEAM

Appleton, WI (December 28, 2015) SOAR Fox Cities, Inc. is happy to welcome Amber Nelson as the new Director of Development to their team.  Amber has 5 years Development experience in different nonprofit organizations throughout Wisconsin.  After graduating for UW-Oshkosh, Amber interned at the Special Olympics Wisconsin Fox Valley Area.  Here is where she realized her passion for working at nonprofit organizations and fundraising.  Amber then joined AmeriCorps where she was a VISTA member at Habitat for Humanity of Dane County in the Development Department.  After her year of service ended she joined the Development team at the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts in Brookfield, WI.  Amber worked at the Wilson Center for almost 4 years where she gained valuable experience in special event fundraisers, corporate relationships and annual fund appeals.  As a High School graduate from Kimberly, Amber is very excited to be moving back to the Fox Valley and close to her family.

Nelson stated: “I love working in Development!  Seeing the generosity in others in either monetary or in kind donations is truly inspiring.  I am very excited to be back in the Fox Cities and to be working at SOAR Fox Cities.  The work that the team at SOAR is doing is so important and I feel honored to help them further their mission of empowering people with differing abilities.”

SOAR Wins Fox Cities Chamber Award!

On Wednesday, June 10th, SOAR Fox Cities was fortunate enough to win the 2015 Exemplary Marketing and/or Performance Award, Small Employer Category from the Fox Cities Chamber! In the past year, SOAR has gone through major changes; including changing the agency name, and revealing a new logo in March of 2015. SOAR is very excited to win this award. SOAR would like to thank all of the individuals, groups, and businesses that have worked to help SOAR reach new heights in 2014-2015. SOAR would also like to extend special gratitude to the Fox Cities Chamber for recognizing SOAR’s efforts in marketing and performance.

SOAR’s Executive Director Graduates from SILE Program

Special congratulations to SOAR’s Executive Director, Sonia Barham for graduating from the 3rd SILE cohort. The Social Innovation Leadership Experience (SILE) teaches local executives about leading towards solving social problems, instead of just managing them. Developed by Midwest Social Innovation, and funded by the J.J. Keller Foundation and the U.S. Venture Fund for Basic Needs; 14 local non-profit leaders completed this third facilitation of SILE.  Throughout the 9 month program, directors gathered on a monthly basis to to study social innovation, visit sites of successful initiatives, and listen to presentations by experts in the field from across the nation. On May 19th, the cohort celebrated a “culminating experience” where each director was honored for finishing their journey in the program. With this training in hand, watch out for new innovative programming coming from SOAR Fox Cities in the future.

Press Conference Regarding Long-term Care and Small Businesses

On Thursday, May 14th, at 10:30 a.m., many local small businesses, advocates, and county leaders will discuss the economic impact and job loss associated with the proposed State Budget at a Press Event at Empowerment Living Services in Neenah, Wisconsin. Attendees from small businesses will be concerned that the proposed elimination of the IRIS program, will take them out of business. CEO’s from Empowerment Living Services and Community Care Connections will be there to share their concerns regarding the future of their business. The County Executive’s from Outagamie County and Portage County will also be there to “local economic data related to the long-term care industry” (Pugh). Water Safety for Children on the Autism Spectrum

During summer, the Neenah Parks & Recreations Department will be offering a “Water Safety/Swim Lesson Program for Children on the Autism Spectrum.” This will be available for children on the Autism Spectrum between the ages of 4-14. With parents participating in the program as well, it is meant to introduce children to water and teaches them to swim in deep water. Children will also learn important life-saving skills in water, without emphasis put on advanced swimming techniques. These lessons will be private (one instructor, one parent/guardian, one child). Parents or guardians must be in the pool with the child, and must be able to swim. Children will also not be able to use flotation devices. These lessons will be on Saturday Mornings from 11:00-11:45 a.m. in two sessions (6/20, 6/27, 7/11, 7/18 and 7/25, 8/1, 8/8, 8/15). Aside from changing the agency’s name to SOAR Fox Cities, Inc. in 2014, SOAR unveiled their new logo in March of 2015. SOAR is very grateful for the nomination of this award, and is very thankful to those who have helped SOAR reach new heights throughout this process.
